Successful Extrication of Bulk Carriers 'Aviator' and 'Atlantic Grace'

Dec 03, 2021 23:48

On December 4, at 7:15 a.m., the bulk carriers 'Aviator' and 'Atlantic Grace' were successfully removed from their predicament. Salvors are currently wrapping up the debunkering process, having extracted 463 tons of fuel oil with no reported oil spill. The Indian Coast Guard's vessel, 'Samudra Pavak', has been actively monitoring the operation to ensure environmental safety. The 'Atlantic Grace' is now on its way to Kandla, while the 'Aviator', which sustained significant damage with a large hole in its port side, is being towed to a designated port of refuge for repairs. Successful Separation of 'Aviator' and 'Atlantic Grace' After Collision

Nov 30, 2021 12:09

On November 29, maritime authorities confirmed that the bulk carrier 'Aviator' and the tanker 'Atlantic Grace' have been successfully separated following a significant collision incident that occurred on November 26. Initial investigations point to a navigational error as the possible cause of the accident. Fortunately, all crew members aboard both vessels, comprising 21 Indian nationals on the 'Atlantic Grace' and 23 Filipinos on the 'Aviator,' escaped unscathed, and no oil leaks were reported, although the damage sustained was substantial. At the time of the accident, the 'Atlantic Grace' was undertaking a return voyage to Fujairah, operating in ballast. The vessel collided with the 'Aviator' amidships on the port side, specifically in the number three cargo hold area. Meanwhile, the 'Aviator' had recently departed from the port heading toward the anchorage, leaving it unclear whether it had reached its destination or was still maneuvering. As of November 30, salvage operations continued with the assistance of the patrol boat 'CG 203' and three tugboats—'M.T. Amarsukh,' 'Ocean Zircon,' and 'Water Lily.' This delicate operation is taking place mid-sea, aimed at preventing further hull damage or the risk of the bulk carrier tilting. The hull breach was reported to be above the waterline, eliminating immediate concerns of the vessel sinking. Both ships are currently under the jurisdiction of the Indian Coast Guard and will remain detained as the ongoing investigation seeks to determine the specifics surrounding this incident. Atlantic Grace and Aviator Remain Entangled Days After Collision in Gulf of Kutch

Nov 29, 2021 10:20

As of November 29, the vessels 'Atlantic Grace' and 'Aviator' continue to remain locked together at coordinates 22° 34.04' N 069° 19.53' E in the Gulf of Kutch. On-site assistance includes the pollution control vessel 'CG 203' (IMO: 9341237) and three tugs: 'Ocean Zircon' (IMO: 9619361), 'Sharan' (IMO: 9688491), and 'Water Lily' (IMO: 9620865). 'Aviator' had previously reported water ingress in cargo hold No.3, but the situation has stabilized. The vessel has deployed both starboard and port side anchors, with the port side extended by only 2.5 shackles. Fortunately, both ships are holding their positions without drifting, situated just outside the DW Channel on the southern side, approximately one nautical mile north of shallower waters. The Coast Guard is closely monitoring the ongoing situation.
