Oil Tanker Linked to Russian Stocks Docks at Kwinana Terminal Amid Protests

Aug 01, 2025 09:39

On July 30, the oil tanker 'Sefens,' which is believed to be carrying gasoline refined potentially from Russian sources, arrived at the Kwinana terminal located about 25 miles south of Perth. The vessel departed from the Jamnagar refinery on July 11, and its arrival sparked protests demanding that it be turned away. However, authorities clarified that the tanker adhered to all legal frameworks and provided valid documentation indicating it was loaded in India. Given the complexities involved in tracing the origin of the oil, determining the exact source remains highly challenging. Australia has enforced strict sanctions on Russia since the onset of its conflict with Ukraine, recently broadening these measures to include sanctions on shadow fleet tankers. Reports indicate that nearly half of the feedstock processed at Jamnagar may originate from Russia, prompting calls for action against such imports. In the last four months of 2025 alone, Australia is noted to have imported roughly $650 million worth of oil products from India, with a substantial portion likely derived from Russian stock—the Jamnagar refinery accounts for about 90% of these imports. As pressure mounts on intermediaries, India’s state-run refineries have temporarily halted purchases of Russian oil this week while they seek alternatives, mainly from Middle Eastern sources. Nevertheless, private companies like Reliance Industries and Nayara Energy remain significant buyers. With the European Union imposing sanctions on Nayara, there have been numerous reports of tankers re-routing shipments and clients scrambling to revoke contracts in response to these new restrictions.

Concerns Rise Over Russian Oil Tanker 'Seferis' Arriving in Kwinana Amid Sanctions

Aug 01, 2025 09:33

In a contentious development, the oil tanker 'Seferis' is scheduled to dock at the Kwinana port in Western Australia despite ongoing sanctions against Russia due to its actions in Ukraine. Having departed from Sitka two weeks ago, the 'Seferis' is transporting crude sourced from the Jamnagar refinery, notorious for its significant reliance on Russian oil, which accounts for approximately 55% of its 2025 inventory. The arrival is set for July 27 at 4 a.m. Local activists have expressed alarm over a prevailing 'loophole' enabling the purchase and sale of Russian oil in Australia. Independent federal MP Andrew Wilkie highlighted this issue during Question Time on July 25, stating, "In July, two vessels reportedly docked in Botany Bay, carrying around 175,000 tonnes of petroleum derived from the Jamnagar refinery in India, which processes a substantial portion of Russian oil. This means that approximately 90,000 tonnes of petrol linked to Russian sources has been financed by Australian consumers, inadvertently contributing to funding Putin’s military actions in Ukraine." The European Union has recently closed similar loopholes, instituting a ban on the importation of petroleum products refined from Russian crude oil in its 18th sanctions package. In light of these developments, the Australian Federation of Ukrainian Organisations has called on the Australian government to adopt comparable measures. Since February 2023, Australia has imported approximately $3.7 billion worth of Russian crude as part of refined petroleum products from Indian refineries, resulting in an estimated $1.8 billion in tax revenue directed to the Russian government.
