Unverified Claims of Attack on Russian Vessels in the Sea of Azov
On February 24, 2022, reports emerged from the Russian border guard service indicating that two Russian vessels allegedly came under attack in the Sea of Azov. According to the statement from the Krasnodar region's border guard department, the civilian cargo ships SGV-Flot and Seraphim Sarovsky were reportedly struck by rocket fire from the Ukrainian armed forces at approximately 11:00 a.m. The attack was said to have originated from the vicinity of Mariupol, resulting in significant damage to the SGV-Flot, which caught fire during the incident. A crew member sustained serious injuries as a result of the blaze. The fire was successfully extinguished, and both vessels continued on their journey. Following the incident, border patrol boats from the Russian domestic secret service, FSB, were dispatched to the scene to assist the injured sailor and manage the situation. However, due to the sole reliance on the Russian source for this information, its authenticity remains uncertain, raising questions about potential propaganda motives behind the report.
SGV-FLOT Averts Grounding Crisis Off Batumi Coast
On January 15, 2022, the cargo vessel SGV-FLOT found itself in a precarious situation off the coast of Batumi, Georgia, as worsening weather conditions caused it to drag anchor and drift dangerously close to the shores of Makhinjauri. Quick-thinking crew members deployed a secondary anchor, successfully preventing a potential grounding incident. The Maritime Transport Agency was promptly engaged, taking decisive action to manage the crisis. Despite the efforts, the tugs stationed at the Batumi port were unable to assist due to high wave conditions and shallow waters surrounding the vessel. However, the SGV-FLOT demonstrated resilience, managing to reposition itself at a secure anchorage and was officially moored at coordinates 41Β° 41.17' N, 041Β° 39.92' E by January 16.
