Tankers Diverted from Strategic Strait of Hormuz Amidst Diplomatic Stalemate
On April 12, 2026, two very large crude carriers (VLCCs), the 'Agios Fanourios I' and the 'Shalamar', were compelled to turn back while approaching the strategic Strait of Hormuz. This decision came after discussions between the United States and Iran concluded without reaching an agreement. The situation unfolded as three VLCCs, none of which were directly associated with Iran, initiated their passage towards the Strait from the Gulf of Oman on the evening of April 11. Upon nearing Iran's Larak Island on the morning of April 12—a critical checkpoint for vessels entering the strait—the 'Agios Fanourios I', bound for Iraq, and the 'Shalamar', destined for Das Island, executed U-turns and redirected away from the Strait. In contrast, the third vessel, identified as 'Mombasa B', continued along the Iran-authorized maritime route between Larak and Qeshm islands into the Persian Gulf, although it did not disclose a specific destination. Notably, both Iraq and Pakistan had previously secured permission from Iran to navigate this route.
