UK Targets Russian Shadow Fleet with Sanctions on 30 Vessels, Including Nanda Devl

Nov 26, 2024 09:28

On November 25, the UK government expanded its sanctions against the Russian Shadow Fleet, adding 30 vessels, including the tanker 'Nanda Devl', to the list due to their involvement in illicit oil transport activities. This decisive move also extends to two Russian insurance firms, Alfastrakhovanie PLC and VSK, highlighting their roles as enablers of these operations. The sanctions aim to cripple Russia's oil revenue streams to impede its ongoing military actions in Ukraine. Over the past year, these sanctioned tankers have reportedly handled more than $4.3 billion worth of oil and its derivatives. With this latest measure, the total vessels sanctioned under the UK’s actions against the Russian shadow fleet have now reached 73, making it the largest such effort by any nation globally. The UK government has called on other countries to join in this initiative, and to date, 46 nations have responded positively, aligning with this global effort. Notably, vessels within the shadow fleet are known for their deceptive practices and inadequate maintenance, presenting significant hazards on international waters. By targeting these vessels and the insurers supporting them, the UK aims not only to hinder Russian operations but also to enhance safety for other vessels traversing these shipping lanes. The sanctions imposed will prevent the sanctioned tankers from accessing UK ports, and UK authorities retain the power to manage the movements of these vessels, including detention if necessary. Furthermore, these vessels will be excluded from the UK Ship Register, having their existing registrations revoked. In addition, they will not be eligible for any exemptions under the Oil Price Cap Exception, even if they participate in qualifying transactions.
