On February 27, 2018, the dedicated volunteer crew of the RNLI Salcombe all-weather lifeboat (ALB) sprang into action to assist the 'Southern Breeze', a merchant vessel situated approximately 15 miles south of Salcombe. The situation escalated as an injured crew member aboard required immediate medical attention, prompting the deployment of a Coastguard Rescue helicopter. A paramedic winchman was successfully lowered to the vessel to provide on-site care. However, the casualty declined air transport to the hospital. In response, the ALB was swiftly maneuvered to the scene, where both the casualty and the winchman were safely evacuated using a pilot ladder. Following the successful transfer, the lifeboat crew made their way back to Salcombe, where they handed over the injured mariner to a waiting ambulance for further medical treatment. After returning to their station, the crew meticulously washed down the lifeboat and prepared it for future missions.
