Severe Gale Forces Three Ships Aground Near Ulsan
On the night of November 25, 2013, the South Korean coastal area near Ulsan experienced powerful gale force winds that resulted in the grounding of three vessels: the 11,347 dwt tanker CS Crane, the 3,565 dwt tanker Bum Jin 5, and the Zhou Hang 2. The ships, which were anchored off the coast, tried to navigate away from the shore as conditions deteriorated. However, before they could reach a safer anchorage, winds surged to speeds of 45 miles per hour and waves soared to four meters, forcing the vessels off course and ultimately onto the beach. The Zhou Hang 2, previously anchored at the E-1 location, attempted to evade the encroaching storm but tragically collided with an underwater rock formation approximately 320 meters from the shore around 1:47 a.m., suffering significant hull damage in the process. Fortunately, there were no reported injuries among the 46 crew members aboard the three ships. The South Korean Coast Guard promptly reacted to the situation, conducting rescue efforts that successfully evacuated 11 crew members from the CS Crane at 2:30 a.m. and from Bum Jin 5 at 3:55 a.m. Meteorological alerts had been issued to local mariners a day prior to the incident, highlighting the severe weather conditions. Unfortunately, despite these warnings, the vessels were unable to move to a more secure anchorage as violent gusts peaked at 20 meters per second and wave heights reached alarming levels.
