Fuel Spill Incident Shuts Down Welland Canal Operations
On June 18, 2015, at 1:15 a.m., the Welland Canal experienced a temporary shutdown due to a significant fuel spill during a ship-to-ship fuel transfer at Wharf 2 in Port Weller. The incident involved the bulk carrier "Atlantic Huron," which was being refueled after departing the canal with a cargo of coal from Chicago, destined for Sydney, Nova Scotia. Reports indicate that between 100 and 150 liters of fuel overflowed into Lake Ontario. Upon discovering the spill, the crew of the "Atlantic Huron" promptly alerted the crew aboard the "Sterling Energy" to halt the fuel transfer. They also activated CSL’s emergency response protocol and summoned the Eastern Canada Response Corp. to manage the containment and cleanup operations. A boom was quickly deployed to restrict the spread of the fuel, allowing a specialized team from Eastern Canada Response Corp. to begin vacuuming the spill. The vessel was expected to be fully cleaned and ready to sail by 6 p.m., with the completion of the cleanup projected by 8 p.m. Shipping activities in the Welland Canal resumed at 4:30 p.m., allowing for normal operations to take place once again.
