Tanker Incident on Westerscheldt: STI St. Charles Grounded
On June 10, 2016, the oil tanker 'STI St. Charles' encountered trouble and ran aground in the Westerscheldt, specifically between Rilland and the Verdronken Land of Saeftinghe. The vessel had departed from Antwerp around midday, on its way to Lomé, Togo, when it faced the grounding incident. Responding to the situation, Rijkswaterstaat's vessel 'RWS 79' and the tugboat 'Union Hawk' provided assistance. Remarkably, the tanker, carrying 37,000 tons of oil, managed to refloat itself with the rising tide using its own power. The 'STI St. Charles' headed back to Flushing for necessary inspections at around 8 p.m. After completing all required measures, the tanker resumed its voyage the following day, June 11, at approximately 6:15 a.m. For further insights, including a report with images and video footage, visit http://www.omroepzeeland.nl/nieuws/2016-06-10/1012370/schip-vastgelopen-op-westerschelde-video#.V1xEgepf3mI.
