On July 25, 2014, Water Police officials in Wilhelmshaven uncovered significant MARPOL violations involving a tanker that had erroneously discharged washing water into the sea while operating in Spanish waters. After departing Hvelva on May 11 with a cargo of methyl alcohol, the vessel engaged in tank washing and subsequently released the waste overboard. Following the incident, the tanker returned to Hvelva to load another cargo of sulfuric acid. The discharge resulted in an environmental impact, with approximately ten tons of wash water and 439 liters of methyl alcohol contaminating the ocean. The Water Police in Wilhelmshaven are now pursuing legal action against the ship's captain and first officer, who were not present when the authorities conducted their inspection on board.
