Tragic Incident Claims Life of Sailor off Norfolk Coast Due to Safety Oversight
A harrowing incident occurred off the coast of Norfolk, resulting in the tragic death of sailor Ryane Palabrica, who was just 26 years old. On April 15, 2012, Palabrica, an ordinary seaman, entered a cargo tank of the Stolt Skua without the necessary authorization, exposing himself to a hazardous atmosphere that was dangerously low in oxygen. During a routine cleaning of pyrolosis gasoline tanks, the ship’s safety protocols were disregarded, as entry into the tank required both an air quality assessment and explicit permission from the chief officer aboard. Tragically, his fellow crew members discovered him unconscious at the bottom of the tank. Despite being airlifted to the James Paget University Hospital in Gorleston, he was unable to recover from the suffocation. Palabrica hailed from Dingle, Iloilo, Philippines, and his untimely death underscores the critical importance of adhering to maritime safety regulations.
