Emergency Anchorage for Ferry 'Strande' After Engine Failure

Feb 06, 2020 09:48

On February 5, 2020, at approximately 5 p.m., the ferry 'Strande' encountered an engine malfunction while navigating the Kiel Fjord, specifically off the port of Möltenort during its route from Laboe to Möltenort. As a precautionary measure, the vessel executed an emergency anchoring to halt its progress. Subsequently, the tugboat 'Stein' arrived on the scene and successfully towed the 'Strande' to the repair pontoon at the railway station quay in Kiel, reaching the location by 6:40 p.m. for necessary repairs. Due to the lack of an immediate replacement ferry, several sailings were canceled, including those scheduled at 5:40 p.m. from Laboe, 5:50 p.m. from Kiel-Friedrichsort, and the 6 p.m. from Möltenort to Kiel central station. Despite the repair team's efforts throughout the night, repairs did not succeed, leading to the decision to mobilize the passenger ferry 'Kitzeberg' on February 6. The 'Kitzeberg' began service at 5:55 a.m. from Möltenort, accommodating the disrupted schedule. As of February 7, the 'Strande' had not yet resumed operations and remained docked at the SFK company's repair pontoon.
