A massive cargo vessel on its way to Japan encountered treacherous 10-meter high waves and fierce winds near the northwestern coast of Vancouver Island. This formidable 200-meter long freighter was subjected to a severe storm late Thursday night, resulting in several hatch covers being forcibly torn off and a portion of its valuable cargo of raw logs spilling into the ocean. At approximately 11 p.m., the captain issued a distress signal amid rising fears that a shift in the remaining cargo from Washington state could lead to a capsizing situation. According to a spokesperson from the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre in Victoria, the situation began to stabilize early Friday morning, and fortunately, the 23 crew members on board do not appear to be in immediate danger. Paul Tasker indicated that a U.S. Coast Guard vessel was en route to the distressed ship, located 300 nautical miles northwest of Vancouver Island, with plans to tow the freighter to safety. The Canadian Coast Guard's assistance will take several days to arrive, but until then, the U.S. ship is prepared to help navigate the damaged vessel back to port in Washington.
