Historic First LNG Bunkering Operation Takes Place in Gothenburg

Sep 04, 2016 12:50

In a significant development for the maritime industry, the Port of Gothenburg has proudly announced the initiation of Sweden's very first liquefied natural gas (LNG) bunkering operation. Jill Söderwall, Vice President and head of commercial operations at the Energy Port in Gothenburg, expressed her excitement, stating, "We have worked resolutely for a long time to create a situation where a ship could bunker liquefied natural gas in Gothenburg. We have now managed to achieve our ambition and we are extremely pleased with the outcome." This pioneering operation will involve the state-of-the-art tanker M/T Ternsund receiving LNG from the Belgian bunkering vessel Coral Energy. This milestone not only enhances Gothenburg's capabilities but also marks a crucial step towards a more sustainable maritime sector in Sweden.

Port of Rotterdam Marks Milestone with First LNG Bunkering Operation

Aug 10, 2016 09:36

On Tuesday, the Port of Rotterdam proudly inaugurated its inaugural LNG bunkering operation for a seagoing vessel. The event followed the arrival of the chemical tanker Ternsund on Sunday, which docked at Vopak in the Botlek to discharge naphtha and gas oil. On Monday afternoon, the Ternsund was relocated to the Willem Alexanderhaven terminal to proceed with the bunkering process. To prepare for the bunkering, the temperature of the ship's fuel tank was gradually lowered from ambient conditions to the required operating temperature. This was achieved through the use of nitrogen, which cooled the tank from +20 °C to an impressive -162 °C over an 18-hour period. The actual bunkering of Shell LNG commenced afterwards and is scheduled for completion on Wednesday morning, after which the vessel will set sail for Gothenburg. This significant operation involved the Ternsund, which is operated by Swedish shipping company Terntank and is noteworthy for being the first newly built LNG-fueled product tanker. The vessel's journey is part of its maiden voyage, which began in China, included a stop in Singapore for loading cargo, and continued to Malta before arriving in Rotterdam for discharge. In recognition of this pioneering effort, Ternsund will be eligible for Rotterdam's inaugural incentive for LNG bunkering, featuring a ten percent discount on seaport dues.

Ternsund: First LNG-Fueled Vessel to Refuel in Rotterdam from August 8

Aug 05, 2016 10:07

In an exciting development for the maritime industry, the Port of Rotterdam is set to conduct its inaugural LNG bunkering operation next week, as confirmed by a company announcement on August 3. The vessel designated for this pioneering refueling is the Ternsund, a dual-fuel product tanker operated by the Swedish shipping company Terntank. Currently on its maiden voyage, the Ternsund is scheduled to deliver a consignment of naphtha to Vopak Botlek in Rotterdam over the weekend of August 6. Following this delivery, the vessel will make its way to the Willem Alexander Terminal, where it will undergo a bunkering process using LNG sourced from the Gate terminal. This procedure is anticipated to take around three days, as the Ternsund currently runs on marine gas oil and requires an adjustment period to cool its onboard fuel tanks before LNG can be introduced.
