Coast Guard Conducts Emergency Medevac from The World near Unimak Island, Alaska
KODIAK, Alaska — In a heroic operation on Saturday, a crew from Coast Guard Air Station Kodiak utilized an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter to medevac a passenger from the motor ship The World near Unimak Island, Alaska. The crew successfully hoisted an 87-year-old woman experiencing heart attack symptoms, along with an attending nurse, before transporting them to emergency medical services in Cold Bay. The emergency response was prompted by a medevac request received from Global Rescue personnel, which outlined the critical condition of the elderly passenger. Following a consultation with a Coast Guard flight surgeon, a medevac was deemed necessary. Master Chief Petty Officer James Armstrong, chief of the D17 Command Center, expressed gratitude for the timely assistance provided by the Coast Guard Cutter Alex Haley and the helicopter crews. "We were fortunate to have the resources in the vicinity to ensure a swift response," he stated. The coordinated efforts of the Coast Guard crew and The World’s staff facilitated the rapid transfer of the patient for advanced medical care. At the time of the hoist, weather conditions included 19-mph winds. Unimak Island is located approximately 43 miles southwest of Cold Bay.
