The tanker 'Huihai Pacific' successfully discharged a significant cargo of Russian oil in Tianjin on January 31, after an unplanned detour from its original destination of Dongjiakou, a key terminal in Shandong province. This vessel has been under U.S. sanctions since January 10 and undertook a notably protracted journey, spending almost four weeks at sea, a stark contrast to the usual transit time of less than a week from Kozmino to China. The 'Huihai Pacific,' a vessel often seen transporting oil from Russia's Pacific coast, offloaded nearly 770,000 barrels of ESPO crude during its port call. The U.S. sanctions imposed on January 10 targeted Russian oil exports and have blacklisted over 70% of the fleet linked to the Kozmino terminal. Although tankers like the 'Huihai Pacific' are allowed until the end of February to unload cargoes that were loaded prior to the announcement of sanctions, many vessels have been reported as idle near China. This situation follows a directive from the Shandong Port Group Co., which operates several terminals in the area. Chinese independent refiners, predominantly located in Shandong, have eagerly procured ESPO and Sokol crude due to favorable pricing and efficient transport routes. However, they now face the challenge of potentially increased transport costs as they continue to source this crude amid changing geopolitical landscapes.

In a significant turn of events, three oil tankers, carrying a combined 270,300 tons of oil, are currently stranded off the coast of China, a direct result of a recent sanctions package imposed by the United States against Russia. These sanctions, which were enacted by Washington last week, have led to considerable disruptions in Russian oil exports. The critical port of Shandong, a major entry point for oil imports into China, has officially prohibited vessels that fall under the scope of US sanctions. The tankers affected by this development include the 'Huihai Pacific,' 'Mermar,' and 'Olia.' The fate of these ships remains uncertain as they await a resolution to the situation. The 'Mermar' set sail from the Russian oil port of Kozmino on December 1, 2024, and reached coordinates 37° 46' N 120° 10' E on January 11, 2025. Similarly, the 'Huihai Pacific' departed Kozmino on December 2, 2024, and docked at the same location on January 8, 2025. With the Chinese port's ban in effect, the future of these tankers hangs in the balance.

On October 17, 2012, the United States Coast Guard launched a search operation for a 26-year-old Turkish crew member aboard the vessel "Aqua," approximately 230 miles south of New Orleans in the Gulf of Mexico. The missing second mate was reportedly last seen walking on the ship's deck, dressed in a green and brown shirt and without a life jacket. Concern for his safety grew when he failed to report for his scheduled watch. To aid in the search efforts, the Coast Guard deployed an HC-144 Ocean Sentry aircraft from the Coast Guard Aviation Training Center in Mobile, Alabama, along with an HC-130 Hercules plane from Coast Guard Air Station Clearwater, Florida. In a collaborative effort, the "Aqua" has returned to the location where the crewmember was last spotted, further assisting in the ongoing search. The weather conditions in the area during the search included winds at 10 mph and sea swells reaching three feet.
