Emergency Medical Evacuation Near Galveston
On December 9, 2016, a critical medevac operation unfolded approximately 15 miles east of Galveston when a Coast Guard helicopter was deployed to assist a man onboard the roll-on roll-off cargo ship 'Torno.' At approximately 4:49 a.m., the crew aboard the 'Torno' contacted the Coast Guard Sector Houston-Galveston, reporting that a 38-year-old worker had been injured by a crank lever, resulting in a severe laceration and potential leg fracture. A flight surgeon assessed the situation and determined that immediate medical attention was necessary. Consequently, a MH-65 Dolphin helicopter from Air Station Houston was sent to the scene. The helicopter arrived swiftly at 6:44 a.m., where the crew executed a successful hoist operation to lift the injured individual aboard. The man was then transported to Scholes International Airport in Galveston, where he was met by emergency medical services. Following assessment, he was taken to the University of Texas Medical Branch and is reported to be in stable condition. For further details, including video coverage, visit the Coast Guard news page.
