Pirate Attack on Torm Alexandra: Crew Safe After Navy Rescue

Nov 07, 2020 18:00

On November 7, 2020, at approximately 6 a.m., the tanker 'Torm Alexandra' experienced a harrowing encounter with pirates while navigating the Gulf of Guinea, roughly 180 miles southeast of Lome. The vessel was traveling from Walvis Bay to West Africa when the boarders struck. In response to the threat, the crew swiftly retreated to the safety of the citadel. Upon notification of the attack, the shipping company Torm's emergency response team activated quickly, reaching out to Maritime Domain Awareness Trade - Gulf of Guinea (MDAT-GoG) to mobilize military support in the region. The Italian frigate ITS 'Martinengo' was the closest military vessel and promptly set a course for the 'Torm Alexandra.' A helicopter was launched from the frigate to oversee the situation as it developed. During the night of November 7, marines from 'Martinengo' conducted a thorough boarding operation of the tanker. After an extensive search, it was determined that the pirates had already evacuated the ship, leaving the crew unharmed. Subsequently, the crew emerged from the citadel to take back control of the 'Torm Alexandra,' and all 20 crew members were reported safe. Meanwhile, naval forces from Benin actively pursued the fleeing pirates, maintaining vigilance in the region.
