Coast Guard and Tanker Join Forces to Rescue 80-Year-Old Solo Sailor in Caribbean
On February 4, 2023, a remarkable rescue operation unfolded in the Caribbean Sea, approximately 57 nautical miles southeast of Puerto Rico, involving the US Coast Guard and the tanker 'Silver Dover'. An 80-year-old sailor was in distress aboard his 44-foot vessel, 'Tao', which had lost steering capabilities, leaving him unable to access both the compass and the emergency tiller. At around 1:45 a.m., the sailor alerted Coast Guard watchstanders at Sector San Juan about his predicament and requested immediate help. The Coast Guard promptly set up a communication schedule with the mariner and disseminated a Maritime Safety Broadcast (MARB) for any nearby vessels that could assist. Unfortunately, the connection with the sailor was later lost as deteriorating sea conditions loomed. Reacting swiftly, the watchstanders released an Urgent Marine Information Broadcast (UMIB) to alert nearby ships of the potential distress. They also dispatched an MH-60T Jayhawk helicopter from Coast Guard Air Station Borinquen to search for the stricken yacht. The 'Silver Dover', upon receiving the UMIB, altered its course to provide assistance. As the Coast Guard helicopter arrived, the tanker successfully came alongside the 'Tao' and safely took the sailor on board. To ensure comprehensive safety, the Coast Guard aircrew deployed a rescue swimmer to the sailing vessel and activated a Self-Locating Datum Marker Buoy to keep track of 'Tao's position, alerting other maritime traffic to the unmanned vessel. The 'Silver Dover' reported the sailor was in good health and is expected to remain on the tanker until it docks in Houston, Texas, on February 11, 2023.
