In a heartbreaking incident on August 29, 2013, a 48-year-old captain from Spijkenisse tragically lost his life after an accident involving the Belgian tank barge "Beringzee" (MMSI: 205508590) in the Caland Canal at the Rotterdam Europoort. The accident occurred on August 26 at approximately 1 PM, during an oil transfer operation to the tanker "Torm Lene". While moored at a buoy, the fuelling process concluded, and the hose was being hoisted when, unexpectedly, it fell from a height of 15 feet, striking the barge master. Emergency response teams, including officers and ambulance staff, quickly arrived on the scene, and despite their efforts to provide assistance, the captain was transported to a hospital in critical condition, where he later succumbed to his injuries. Following this tragic event, an investigation has been initiated by the Inspectie SZW, while the "Torm Lene" departed from Rotterdam, setting sail towards Lome on the same day.
