Customs Halts Cargo from 'Trans Tind' for Agricultural Verification in Cartagena

Sep 16, 2025 12:05

On September 15, 2025, the Tax Agency, through its Customs service, initiated an immobilization of the cargo aboard the vessel 'Trans Tind' in Cartagena to assess its intended agricultural usage. The Government Delegate confirmed that the shipment was primarily intended for fertilizer production; however, the Customs officials are conducting tests to eliminate any other possible applications and to ensure that the chemical components involved are exclusively for fertilizer manufacturing. The ship arrived with an impressive load of over 4,500 tons of phosphoric acid, a key ingredient widely used in the agri-food sector and fertilizer production. This operation has sparked significant debate, particularly after concerns were raised by organizations such as Free Palestine in the Region of Murcia, the BDS Murcia movement, and Podemos. They have connected the shipment to firms linked with the Israeli government, accusing them of 'complicity with genocide' in Gaza due to the extraction of resources from occupied territories. On September 16, the Government of the Region of Murcia reiterated that the shipment was indeed associated with agricultural fertilizers and thus not included in the embargo announced by Spain. Nonetheless, Customs has opted to retain the goods to guarantee that their final usage will solely be for fertilizer manufacturing. The 'Trans Tind,' which left Ashdod on September 8, reached the port of Cartagena on September 14.
