Heroic Rescue by Tanker Crew Saves Two from Boating Mishap Near Baker Lake
In a remarkable display of heroism on July 23, 2020, two residents of Baker Lake narrowly escaped a potentially tragic boating incident, thanks to the prompt actions of the crew aboard the tanker 'Turaq W'. The duo embarked on a canoe trip from the Kivalliq community, only to find themselves in danger when their canoe capsized just one kilometer from shore, plunging them into icy waters. The 'Turaq W', fortunately in the vicinity, had its captain spring into action, dispatching a rescue team within moments of the capsize. Remarkably, the crew managed to recover the two men within just 15 minutes. Their quick response ensured the safety of the individuals, who were immediately given first aid once aboard. Fortunately, both men were equipped with personal flotation devices, a crucial factor that contributed to their survival. In addition to the tanker crew, the Baker Lake RCMP and local search and rescue teams played vital roles in the operation. After receiving treatment at the community health center, the men were released, thankful for their fortunate outcome.

On December 27, 2019, at approximately 4:30 PM, the tanker 'Tuvaq W.', which was traveling from Port Menier, experienced a critical failure of one of its two main engines. This incident occurred off the coast of Saint-Michel-de-Bellechasse, Quebec, precisely at coordinates 46° 53' 03.4" N and 070° 56' 18.4" W. Following the engine failure, the vessel navigated to Trois-Rivières where the crew initiated necessary repairs. As of January 1, 2020, the Tuvaq W. remained stationary while repairs were underway.
