This ship, which previously flew the flags of Poland, Namibia, and Belize before adopting the Russian flag, has raised concerns among environmentalists. Investigations by Greenpeace suggest that the 'Vasiliy Filippov' is operated by a Namibian company on behalf of the Icelandic firm Samherji, which is currently embroiled in corruption allegations in Namibia. The presence of this trawler is alarming to many, as it could exacerbate the existing pressure on fish stocks in Senegalese waters that are already overexploited. With local fishermen struggling to meet their daily needs and households facing challenges in securing fish, the arrival of the 'Vasiliy Filippov', designed for large-scale production, raises serious concerns about the sustainability of marine resources.
