Constructor Zhivotovsky Collides with Lukoil Oil Rig in Caspian Sea
On April 12, 2021, the ‘Constructor Zhivotovsky’, a Russian oil and chemical tanker, experienced a significant allision with a Lukoil oil rig located in the Caspian Sea at coordinates 40°16′N 49°44′E. The vessel was en route from Astrakhan to Baku carrying a load of 4,500 tons of gas oil when it struck the remnants of an oil platform owned by the Azerbaijani national oil corporation amid poor visibility conditions. Fortunately, the tanker emerged from the incident largely unscathed and proceeded to Baku, arriving on May 13 for a damage assessment. Notably, there were no reported casualties or oil spills from the incident. However, the oil rig did sustain considerable damage, with debris from the structure landing on the foreship of the Constructor Zhivotovsky.
