Clipper Daisy Aids in Urgent Medivac Operation Near Bermuda

Nov 26, 2011 14:20

In a dramatic rescue operation, two merchant vessels, including the 'Clipper Daisy', answered a call for help from the U.S. Coast Guard to medevac a Canadian man who was exhibiting symptoms consistent with a heart attack. This urgent mission took place approximately 170 miles southwest of Bermuda on November 24, 2011. The Coast Guard's 5th District Command Center effectively coordinated the operation utilizing the Automated Mutual-Assistance Vessel Rescue (AMVER) System after receiving a distress signal from amateur radio operator, Nicole Gaudreault, based in Montreal. The distress call originated from the man's wife, who identified herself as a nurse, expressing concern for her husband's health while they were aboard their 36-foot yacht, the 'Argo V', en route to St. Martin. During the emergency call, she indicated the pressing need for a medevac due to her husband's critical condition. The cargo ship 'Mary Ann Hudson' reported that they were around 120 nautical miles away from the 'Argo V' and were prepared to divert their course to assist, indicating they had heart medication available aboard. Meanwhile, the crew of the 'Clipper Daisy' also pledged assistance, expressing their readiness to change course and reach the 'Argo V' to transport the ill man to Bermuda, despite lacking medication. The situation became more complicated as the 'Argo V's' wife attempted to navigate towards Bermuda but was hindered by adverse weather conditions, including strong winds and 6-foot seas. Fortunately, the 'Clipper Daisy' successfully made contact with the 'Argo V' around midnight, where the crew facilitated the transfer, bringing the man aboard their vessel for immediate medical attention. Following the rescue, the patient was scheduled for transport to Bermuda and subsequent transfer to a local hospital for further treatment. This operation underscores the critical role of maritime collaboration and effective communication in emergency situations at sea.
