Awilco LNG Reaches Final Settlement Following 2019 Collision Near Singapore
Norway's Awilco LNG has successfully concluded a comprehensive settlement regarding the collision involving its LNG carrier 'WilForce' and the bulk carrier 'Moscow,' which occurred off the coast of Singapore in May 2019. On December 19, 2023, the company, which operates two 156,000-cbm TFDE LNG carriers, announced a final agreement reached by both shipowners and their respective insurance companies. As outlined in this settlement, Awilco LNG will receive approximately $4.9 million as full compensation for damages and lost operational time resulting from the incident. Notably, Awilco has indicated that this compensation will be recorded as income in their financial statements for the fourth quarter of 2023, as the impact of the claim had not previously been reflected. In a ruling from May last year, a UK court in London determined that the 2019-built bulk carrier 'Western Moscow,' owned by Ratu Shipping, held the majority of the liability for the collision with 'WilForce.' The court apportioned liability at a ratio of 75:25, identifying the bulk carrier as the primary cause of the accident. Moreover, the total claims resulting from this collision have been estimated at approximately $17.6 million. In related developments, Awilco LNG has also entered into a term sheet with an Asian leasing firm to refinance both the 'WilForce' and 'WilPride' carriers, with expectations for the deal to be finalized in the first half of 2024.
Significant Collision in Singapore Waters Involves WilForce and Western Moscow
On May 30, 2019, a notable maritime incident occurred when the LNG tanker 'WilForce' collided with the newly constructed vessel 'Western Moscow,' owned by Nisshin Shipping, while navigating towards Singapore in a ballast condition. The collision resulted in significant damage to the 'WilForce,' prompting it to dock at Keppel, Benoi Shipyard for repairs. Currently, the duration of the vessel's downtime remains uncertain. According to Awilco LNG, the Norwegian shipping company that operates the 'WilForce,' initial assessments indicate that the fault lies with the 'Western Moscow.' Following the incident, the 'Western Moscow' underwent permanent repairs, which were completed on September 10. The vessel departed from Ijmuiden at 2:50 PM, setting its course for Muuga, with an estimated arrival date of September 14. Meanwhile, 'WilForce' departed Singapore waters on September 9 at 11:30 AM, heading towards the South China Sea.
