In a recent development in the maritime industry, a vessel has been officially sold for scrapping after an extensive period of service. The decision to part with the vessel marks a notable transition, as it heads towards the breakers for dismantling. Neste Oil, the Finnish oil refining giant, has announced plans to divest from its shipping operations, which includes the sale of its fleet and outsourcing of ship management services. In a statement released on Thursday, company representatives confirmed that around 320 employees involved in ship management will transition to a new employer as part of this strategic move. Neste Oil aims to offload five tankers—Mastera, Futura, Neste, Kiisla, and Suula—alongside three tugs: Ukko, Ahti, and Esko. These vessels will be sold to entities affiliated with Finland's National Emergency Supply Agency and the Ilmarinen Mutual Pension Insurance Company, all transactions occurring at current market value. Following the sale, Neste Oil will enter into long-term leasing agreements to retain use of the vessels, which will remain under the Finnish flag. This decision marks a significant shift in Neste Oil's operational focus as it seeks to streamline its business.
