Non-Sanctioned Tankers Navigate to Venezuela with Crude Cargo

Jan 02, 2026 17:21

The tanker 'Thousand Sunny' is projected to reach the waters off Venezuela by mid-January 2026, following its current trajectory. Since its declaration, 'Thousand Sunny' has maintained its course, having rounded the Cape of Good Hope on December 24 while traveling ballast toward Venezuela at a steady speed of 12.4 knots. This vessel has been engaged in transporting Venezuelan Merey crude to China for five years. Flying the Chinese flag, its ownership remains unverified, and it is not subject to U.S. sanctions. The ship was sold by the China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC) in 2020 as part of a transaction aimed at strengthening crude flow between Venezuela and China, making consistent trips between the Jose Terminal and Ningbo ever since. Another Chinese-flagged Very Large Crude Carrier (VLCC), the 'Xing Ye,' is also currently en route, slowly making its way off the coast of French Guiana to load in Venezuela. This vessel, which has not faced any sanctions and was previously owned by CNPC, is expected to load cargo in Venezuela in January 2026. Its last operation involved loading Venezuelan crude in August, continuing its dedicated service in the Venezuela-China trade since its 2020 sale to an undisclosed buyer.
