K Line's Yamatogawa Makes History as First ABS-Classed Japan-Flagged Vessel
Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha (K Line) has marked a significant milestone in the maritime industry with the announcement that its Very Large Crude Carrier (VLCC) Yamatogawa has become the first-ever Japan-flagged vessel to be classified by the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS). This achievement not only sets the Yamatogawa apart as a pioneer among Japan-flagged vessels but also positions it as the inaugural entrant among all vessels classified by foreign classification societies. K Line's commitment to enhancing the fleet of Japan-flagged vessels aligns with the initiatives of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport & Tourism (MLIT), which is focused on expanding the national fleet designated for oceangoing operations. Originally completed in December 2006, the Yamatogawa was operating under a Panamanian flag until K Line successfully transitioned to a Japan flag in December 2012, following the MLIT's recognition of ABS as an authorized organization for statutory certification services for Japan-flagged ships. In addition to ABS, the Japanese government has also registered Lloyd's Register of Shipping and DNV GL as recognized classification entities. This historic classification underscores K Line's dedication to advancing Japan’s maritime capabilities and contributing to the growth of its national fleet.
