Amber 1 Tanker Fined for MARPOL Non-Compliance in Kiel
On February 7, 2017, during a port state control operation, authorities from the water police in Kiel conducted an inspection of the tanker "Amber 1," uncovering numerous violations related to MARPOL regulations. The inspection revealed discrepancies in waste management documentation, including false notices and missing records pertaining to waste disposal. There were serious concerns regarding illegal disposal of food waste at sea, raising suspicions that the crew was not adhering to proper waste management protocols. Investigators found that waste was improperly stored on board, outside designated collection points, and was not sorted as required by international maritime law. As a result of these violations, which contravene MARPOL Annex V, the Federal Maritime and Hydrography Agency imposed a security guarantee of 100 Euros, which was paid by the ship's first officer. The "Amber 1" had docked in Kiel at 8:25 a.m. and subsequently resumed its journey to Nynäshamn at 12:45 p.m. Following the incident, the water police in Kiel have launched a detailed investigation to ensure compliance with environmental regulations.
