On August 15, 2023, at approximately 2 a.m. WIB, the Bangka Belitung Search and Rescue (SAR) team successfully evacuated two Vietnamese crew members, Nguyen Van Trinh, 41, and Vo Quang Viet, 35, from the tanker 'AB Olivia' in the Karimata Strait, located in the Riau Islands. The crew members sustained critical injuries due to a fierce fire that broke out in the bosun room of the vessel, which was making its way from Singapore to Balikpapan. The injured crewmen were promptly transferred onto the KN 'SAR Karna' operated by Basarnas Bangka Belitung, near Rebo Beach. Nguyen Van Trinh suffered severe burns affecting 90% of his body, while Vo Quang Viet experienced burns covering approximately 60%. After their rescue, both individuals were transported to Pangkal Balam Port and subsequently taken to Siloam Pangkalpinang Hospital for urgent medical care.
