Tragic Incident Aboard the 'Shandong Zhe': Third Officer Found Dead
In a heart-wrenching incident, a 24-year-old Indian Third Officer aboard the tanker 'Shandong Zhe' was discovered deceased in the bow thruster room on October 1, 2021. The vessel was in transit to the Banco Del Hoyo Anchorage W within the Gibraltar Strait after departing from ports in the Gulf of Guinea. The crew became alarmed when the officer failed to arrive for his dinner shift to relieve the Chief Officer, prompting a general alarm that led to a crew muster for search efforts. Tragically, at approximately 7 p.m., he was located hanging in the bow thruster area. Despite immediate cardiac resuscitation (CPR) efforts and subsequent transfer to the ship's infirmary, he was unfortunately declared dead at 8:45 p.m. UTC by the Telemedical Maritime Assistance Service (TMAS), which was contacted promptly after the discovery. The 'Shandong Zhe' docked at Europa Point Gibraltar on October 3 and remained at anchor as of October 4. The Third Officer had joined the tanker in Lome at the end of August, marking a short but impactful tenure at sea.
