Chemroad Journey Successfully Refloated After 23 Days Grounded

Jul 02, 2017 21:43

On July 2, the tanker 'Chemroad Journey' was successfully refloated after a challenging 23-day ordeal. This operation was conducted under the oversight of the Vietnam Maritime Bureau, the Ministry of Transport, and the Vietnam SAR Coordination Center. The tanker had initially grounded in the Hon Da area, located in Southeastern Vung Tau, approximately 120 nautical miles off Binh Thuan, at coordinates 10-02.90N; 108-58.40E. To facilitate its refloating, around 8,000 tons of the vessel's cargo, which consisted of 30,000 tons of chemicals, were siphoned off by the tanker 'Sun Mercury' (IMO: 9291444), moored alongside the grounded ship since July 1. Furthermore, from June 15 to June 26, a preventative operation saw about 826 tons of chemicals transferred from the bow of the Chemroad Journey to other tanks to avert any risk of oil pollution. The vessel was under significant stress, having suffered two ruptured ballast tanks and listing at a precarious angle of 15.5 degrees to port. Finally, at 3:37 p.m., a coordinated effort involving multiple rescue vessels, including 'CN-09 BP 11.19.01' from the Border Patrol of Binh Thuan Province, 'CSB 6008' from the Coast Guard, and 'SAR 413' from the Joint Search Center Trabajador 1 of the Philippines, along with Vietnamese vessels 'Minh Hoang 06', 'Sea Boxer', 'Sea Tiger', and 'Lam Hong' from Panama pulled the vessel to safety at Phu Quy (Binh Thuan). Efforts Underway to Lighter Grounded Tanker 'Chemroad Journey'

Jun 19, 2017 10:07

On June 17, a critical operation commenced to alleviate the grounding of the 'Chemroad Journey', a chemicals tanker. Over 200 tons of fuel were scheduled for transfer into the aft tanks to raise the vessel's bow, which had been grounded approximately 28 miles south of Phu Quy Island, at coordinates 10°02'N 108°58'E. The ship was loaded with about 10,000 tons of various chemicals, including Butyraldehyde, Ethylene Glycol, Ethyl Hexanol, and Ethanol Amine, all of which were set to be siphoned to a smaller tanker positioned nearby. The salvage operation involved the tug 'Minh Hoang 06', which successfully transported a team of nine specialists to the site. This contingent included six Japanese experts, two Korean technicians, and one Vietnamese representative, all focused on assessing and remedying the situation. The vessel was reported to be tilting at a concerning 15.5 degrees to its port side, and water had penetrated one of its bow ballast tanks. Initial inspections revealed that a significant portion of the bow was lodged on the sea floor, with visible damage to the outer hull. Authorities are continuing to monitor and prepare for further salvage operations. Nippon Salvage Engaged to Rescue Grounded Tanker Chemroad Journey

Jun 15, 2017 09:38

The tanker Chemroad Journey has become stranded approximately 28 miles south of Phu Quy Island, specifically at coordinates 10 02N 108 58E. On June 14, a team comprised of experts, local officials, and representatives from the SAR agency and Coast Guard conducted an on-site evaluation of the situation. Thankfully, no fuel leaks have been reported from the vessel, which is carrying 29,954 tons of cargo along with 144 tons of bunker fuel. All 27 crew members onboard are reported safe, although the ship is listing at a concerning 15 degrees to port. The salvage operation is currently focused on two potential strategies. One plan involves tilting the ship's aft to raise the fore section, which is currently resting on the seabed, followed by towing the vessel free. Alternatively, lightering—removing some cargo to reduce weight—may be considered before attempting to refloat the vessel. A salvage tug from Nippon Salvage is expected to arrive at the site later this evening to aid in the rescue efforts.
