What Crew Members Say About Key-Bora

A recent investigation by the Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) has uncovered that the grounding of the chemical tanker 'Key Bora' on December 28, 2020, was due to the crew relying on insufficient seabed survey data that failed to indicate the presence of a boulder near Mowi's pier in Kyleakin, Skye. As the vessel navigated towards the fish farming company's pier, it struck the obstruction, resulting in hull damage and flooding in its ballast tanks. Fortunately, there were no injuries and no pollution reported during the incident. The tanker was aground for approximately 12 minutes before successfully refloating. The MAIB's findings highlighted the crew's decision to utilize locally-produced data instead of an electronic nautical navigation system, which would have identified the boulder. In response to these findings, the MAIB has issued safety recommendations aimed at improving Mowi's operational protocols at the pier.
