Tankers 'Mercan' and 'Marvin Faith' Struggle to Set Sail After Long Seizure Period

Mar 24, 2026 10:44

After spending over five tumultuous years in port, the vessels formerly known as the 'Marvin Confidence' and 'Marvin Faith' (IMO: 9820300) finally departed Rotterdam on January 17, only to find themselves stagnant off the coast of Dubai. The 'Mercan' has anchored off Sharjah at the coordinates 25° 22' N 055° 23' E since February 17. These tankers, which were docked in the Waalhaven, became entangled in a complicated ownership dispute that led to their seizure. The ownership issues involved competing claims from Hong Kong companies Grace and Expander, along with Greek firms Lozenge Chemical Carriers and Garnet Maritime. The crux of the matter centered around a connection to Iran and allegations of avoiding sanctions; they initially intended for their arrangement to be a charter but later turned it into a purchase agreement. According to attorney Cherry Almeida, representing Caland Advocaten, the arrangement was meant to allow one Greek company to register as the owner. However, complications arose when the original owner renounced this agreement, asserting it was merely a charter. The controversy deepened as the opposing parties claimed that the ownership registration was executed under fraudulent pretenses, which justified the original seizure. Initially, Lozenge and Garnet managed costs associated with the vessels, including port fees and crew salaries, but once Grace and Expander took control, the ships could no longer operate, halting any incoming revenue. Eventually, responsibility for costs shifted to Hong Kong. Legal battles raged on in courts across Panama and London, while the ships remained locked in a standoff in Rotterdam. Just as Grace and Expander began managing the expenses and preparations for the ships' departure were underway, the Greek manager, Marvin, intervened to seize both vessels, asserting his own claims. Throughout this prolonged saga, the crew—which included Russian and Georgian sailors—stayed on board for the majority of the time, only able to disembark after a year. To maintain operations, the Port of Rotterdam Authority arranged for an Indian crew to take over, ensuring the vessels were manned. The lengthy seizure finally concluded in December following a settlement between manager Marvin and Grace and Expander, paving the way for the ships to resume their journeys. After undergoing a technical inspection, both the 'Mercan' and 'Marvin Faith' set sail towards the Persian Gulf, ending a long chapter of uncertainty for the vessels.

Tanker 'Marvin Confidence' Sets Sail from Rotterdam After Five-Year Seizure

Dec 16, 2025 11:57

On December 15, 2025, the tanker 'Marvin Confidence' embarked on its journey from the Waalhaven in Rotterdam after an extensive five-year seizure. The vessel, along with its counterpart the 'Marvin Faith', was detained in 2020 by Marvin Shipping Services based in Athens due to an unpaid debt amounting to roughly €600,000. Throughout this prolonged period, the crews hailing from Georgia and Russia faced a challenging situation, unable to return home, without wages, and lacking appropriate visas. Despite the extended duration of the seizure, the identity of the ship's owner remained undisclosed. It is speculated that the tanker may have been auctioned off to settle the back wages owed to the crew members. Prior to its departure, the 'Marvin Confidence' was stationed at Elbehaven in the Europoort, where divers were summoned to conduct a thorough evaluation of the ship's seaworthiness. Meanwhile, the 'Marvin Faith' continues to remain moored at the Waalhaven.

Bulk Carriers Stuck in Rotterdam Await Fate

May 15, 2025 13:23

The bulk carriers 'Marvin Faith' (IMO: 9820300) and 'Marvin Confidence' remain in a state of limbo in Rotterdam. These vessels were detained on September 28 and 29, 2020, following a request from their crew due to unpaid wages totaling approximately $328,000. An auction was initially planned for September 24, 2021, but it was abruptly canceled when an undisclosed amount of funds was deposited. As of May 15, 2025, both ships continue to idle in port, with uncertainties surrounding their future.
