Tankers 'Mercan' and 'Marvin Faith' Stuck Off Dubai After Extended Seizure
Following a protracted five-year seizure, the vessels formerly known as 'Marvin Confidence' and 'Marvin Faith'—now renamed 'Mercan' (IMO: 9820295)—set sail from Rotterdam on January 23. However, their journey has been abruptly halted as they drift off the coast of Dubai. The tankers were docked off Sharjah at coordinates 25° 22' N 055° 23' E since March 2. The saga began in the Waalhaven, where both ships were held due to a contentious ownership dispute. Hong Kong firms Grace and Expander argued they owned the ships, but Greek shipping enterprises Lozenge Chemical Carriers and Garnet Maritime also claimed rights over them. The core of the dispute stemmed from allegations of a fraudulent deal linked to Iran that transformed an intended charter into a purchase agreement. According to Cherry Almeida, a lawyer representing Caland Advocaten, one of the Greek companies intended to register as the vessel's owner, but the original agreement was retracted. The rival parties contested this narrative, insisting that the ownership registration was carried out deceptively, which led to the initial seizure of the tankers. While Lozenge and Garnet were responsible for covering costs such as crew wages and port fees, financial inflows ceased due to the seizure. Eventually, Hong Kong entities stepped in to assume these expenses. Legal battles ensued in courts located in both Panama and London, as the ships remained under seizure in Rotterdam. Just when it appeared that Grace and Expander were committed to paying the associated costs, the Greek management, Marvin, intervened and took possession of both tankers, asserting their own claim. Throughout this tumultuous period, the crew, primarily made up of Russians and Georgians, remained aboard for a full year. It wasn't until their replacement by an Indian crew, coordinated by the Port of Rotterdam Authority, that they were finally permitted to disembark. In December, the long-standing seizure was lifted, presumably due to a settlement reached between manager Marvin and the claimants Grace and Expander. With the conclusion of the legal turmoil, both ships were cleared to resume their voyage, and after undergoing technical inspections, the 'Mercan' and 'Marvin Faith' embarked towards the Persian Gulf.
After Five Years Docked, 'Marvin Confidence' Departed Waalhaven on December 15, 2025
On December 15, 2025, the tanker 'Marvin Confidence' set sail from Rotterdam's Waalhaven, marking the end of its five-year stay in port. Originally seized alongside its sister ship, 'Marvin Faith', by Marvin Shipping Services in Athens in 2020 due to an outstanding debt of approximately €600,000, the vessel had faced significant challenges during its long period of inactivity. The crew, composed of individuals from Georgia and Russia, experienced great hardship without wages and were unable to return home or obtain proper visas. The ownership of the tankers remained undisclosed throughout this ordeal. There are speculations that the ship may have been auctioned off to resolve the crew's back pay. Prior to its departure, divers were engaged to evaluate the 'Marvin Confidence's' seaworthiness while it was moored at Elbehaven in Europoort. As of the latest reports, the 'Marvin Faith' continues to remain docked in the Waalhaven. Idle Bulk Carriers in Rotterdam Await Resolution
The bulk carriers 'Marvin Faith' and 'Marvin Confidence' (IMO: 9820295) have been detained in Rotterdam since September 28/29, 2020. The crew's decision to request the arrest stemmed from unresolved back wages amounting to around $328,000. An auction for the vessels was initially planned for September 24, 2021; however, it was abruptly canceled due to the deposition of an undisclosed sum of money. As of May 15, 2025, both ships remain in the same holding pattern, highlighting ongoing issues in maritime operations and crew welfare.
