Neuwerk Icebreaker Faces Generator Outage, Impacting LNG Supply in Mukran

Feb 19, 2026 09:59

The icebreaker 'Neuwerk', tasked with keeping the shipping channel to the LNG terminal at Mukran, Rügen, ice-free, encountered a significant setback on February 13, 2026. A technical failure resulted in a power loss, rendering the vessel unable to break ice effectively. Following the incident, the ship was promptly taken out of service and returned to the port of Mukran, as confirmed by the Waterways and Shipping Authority (WSA). On February 15, the 'Neuwerk' was transferred to Rostock for a thorough inspection by technicians, who identified a defect in one of the three generators of the MTU 16 V 595 TC 50 main engines. Unfortunately, the situation was exacerbated as another auxiliary engine had already been removed for repairs, leaving only one operational engine. Due to the repair complications and the unexpected downtime, the ice-breaking operations faced delays, prompting the use of tugboats to clear the ice. Heavy ice conditions had rendered the port of Mukran inaccessible to LNG tankers for several days. In a strategic move, the 'Neuwerk' was relocated from the North Sea to the Baltic Sea, where it could assist in maintaining the ice-free shipping lanes. In a reciprocal arrangement, Germany’s largest Baltic Sea icebreaker, the 'Arkona' (IMO: 9285811), was dispatched to the North Sea to support ongoing operations there. Meanwhile, a smaller chartered tug, the 'VB Bremen Fighter' (IMO: 9321287), was assigned to keep the shipping channel to the port of Sassnitz clear of ice. On February 11, the LNG carrier 'Maran Gas Nice' (174,295 cbm) successfully navigated through the ice with an escort from Mukran, delivering its cargo to the terminal. However, another vessel, the 'Minerva Amorgas' (174,000 cbm), was left waiting offshore for ice conditions to improve, anticipated to reach the floating terminal by February 17 or 18. This uncertainty occurred against a backdrop of Germany’s gas storage levels reaching their lowest since 2013. Deutsche ReGas assured that they were managing supply under challenging conditions that left little room for operational flexibility. Investigation Underway for Potential Container Loss by Neuwerk off Schiermonnikoog

Dec 10, 2020 10:05

On December 9, 2020, the vessel 'Neuwerk' was deployed to the North Sea region near White Bank, following reports from Dutch fishermen regarding submerged containers approximately 200 kilometers from the Elbe estuary. Fisherman Jelle Hakvoort identified objects resting on the ocean floor, located about 90 miles north of Schiermonnikoog, on December 3. During his initial survey with sonar, he detected anomalies at the summit of the bank, a finding that was reconfirmed during a subsequent pass. Although he promptly retrieved his nets, he did not record the sonar imagery. However, two of his colleagues successfully spotted a minimum of four containers in the vicinity. Interestingly, a large container ship, the 'Maersk Munich,' became the focus of attention due to its proximity to the site. On December 3, the vessel was en route from Bremerhaven to Gothenburg, during which its speed was notably reduced as it headed northwards at a cautious pace. By the afternoon of December 5, the 'Maersk Munich' had resumed its speed and was berthed at the APM Terminal in Gothenburg. In light of the investigation, the Danish shipping giant A.P. Moller-Maersk has firmly denied any connection to the missing cargo. They inquired with their captains about any recent cargo losses, but no relevant reports have surfaced. As the investigation unfolds, coordination with German authorities continues, with the water and shipping authority in Cuxhaven anticipating more detailed information about the objects on the seabed by December 10.

Recovery Efforts Underway After Wind Turbine Rotor Blade Breaks Off

Jun 25, 2015 11:14

On June 19, 2015, a significant incident occurred at the Northsea East offshore wind park, located approximately 35 kilometers north of Heligoland, where a 60-meter rotor blade broke off from one of its turbines. The damaged rotor blade was subsequently transported by the vessel 'Neuwerk' to Heligoland's port before being moved to Bremerhaven for further examination. Following the accident, all 48 wind turbines at the facility were temporarily shut down as investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident were initiated. Despite the unfortunate occurrence, parts of the wind farm, which only became operational in May, have resumed functioning while the operator, RWE, has yet to remove the affected wind turbine.
