On July 11, 2022, a dramatic rescue operation unfolded in the Indian Ocean as the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) Colombo sprang into action to save three distressed fishermen. The fishermen had found themselves in perilous conditions after their fishing trawler, registered as IMUL – A-0301 MTR, became stranded amid stormy seas approximately 174 nautical miles southeast of Sri Lanka’s Great Basses Reef Lighthouse. The local trawler had departed from Valaichchenai Fisheries Harbour on July 2. Responding to a distress call, the MRCC Colombo swiftly pinpointed the fishermen's location and dispatched the tanker 'Shogun,' which was conveniently navigating nearby on its voyage from Lahad Datu to Galle. Upon reaching the distressed vessel, the crew of the 'Shogun' faced challenging weather conditions but remained resolute in their mission. Arrangements were promptly made by the MRCC Colombo to safely transport the fishermen back to Galle harbour.
