Daring Rescue at Sea: Three Ships Aid Distressed Migrants in Mediterranean
On May 3, 2020, the cargo vessel m/v 'Marina' embarked on a humanitarian mission in the central Mediterranean, successfully rescuing 78 distressed migrants from a precarious boat. The incident occurred in the evening as the ship was sailing from Sfax to Sousse. Among those saved was a pregnant woman, highlighting the urgency of the operation. The rescue was initiated following a request from the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC), prompting three ships to commence a search in the area. Shortly after, the m/v 'Pyxis Epsilon' located a dinghy carrying 43 individuals, all sub-Saharan, also in distress. Both vessels operated within the Search and Rescue (SAR) zone of Malta, positioned just 20 nautical miles from the shores of Lampedusa. Despite the critical situation, no Italian military vessels appeared to have intervened from the nearby Pelagie Islands during the night. The 'Marina' and 'Pyxis Epsilon', accompanied by a third vessel, m/v 'Karina', made their way towards Lampedusa. While the 'Marina' remained anchored just outside Italian waters, waiting for further instructions with its 78 rescued migrants on board, the 'Pyxis Epsilon' escorted the dinghy carrying 43 individuals into Italian territorial waters. Upon arrival, the migrants were promptly transferred to Coast Guard and Guardia di Finanza patrol boats and transported to Lampedusa, reaching land by the afternoon. Meanwhile, the 'Pyxis Epsilon' resumed its journey towards Tunisia, having fulfilled its mission to aid those in dire need.
