The DGzRS lifeboat "Harro Koebke," based in Sassnitz, was deployed to assist. A rescue helicopter featuring a medical team took off from Greifswald shortly thereafter, at 8:50 p.m. It skillfully landed on the lifeboat’s helideck, allowing the medical personnel and an assistant to board quickly. By 9:20 p.m., the team was on the "Elisabeth Mann Borgese," where they provided urgent medical attention to the patient. Subsequently, the individual was transferred onto the lifeboat using a stretcher. The lifeboat raced back to Sassnitz while continuing medical care en route. Upon arrival, the helicopter was already on standby to transport the patient to the hospital in Greifswald for further treatment.

At the time of the incident, the ship was navigating from Warnemünde to Gotland, located approximately 14 miles northwest of the picturesque Rügen Island. In response to the urgency, the lifeboat 'Wilhelm Kaisen' was dispatched to retrieve the ailing scientist. He was successfully lifted from the northern tip of Rügen and swiftly transported to Sassnitz, where an ambulance awaited to provide critical medical assistance and shuttle him to the nearest hospital. This event underscores the importance of rapid response in maritime medical emergencies.

On Wednesday, the fleet of research vessels managed by the Leeraner shipping company Briese celebrated a significant milestone with the delivery of the state-of-the-art ship, "Elizabeth Mann Borgese," in Rostock. This new addition, designed for research in the Baltic Sea, replaces the aging "Professor Albrecht Penck," which has served for 60 years. Briese not only operates the "Elizabeth Mann Borgese" but also provides its skilled crew, ensuring a seamless transition for marine research activities in the region.
