Successful Recovery of Grounded Barge by Enak at Timmendorf Beach

Jun 03, 2024 10:39

On June 1, 2024, the salvage vessel 'Enak' successfully recovered a stranded 190-ton barge from the Arnold Ritscher company at Timmendorf Beach. The barge had broken away and become trapped under the newly constructed pier on May 21 due to severe weather conditions. The intricate salvage operation began at 6 a.m., where crew members meticulously lifted the pontoon piece by piece. After being dislodged from the bridge, the barge was transported to Neustadt port for a thorough damage assessment. To facilitate the recovery, teams installed four 1.5-ton salvage lugs on the barge, through which steel cables were threaded. A significant challenge was the need to pump out large volumes of water from the barge's compartments, which had sustained damage from grounding. The entirety of the recovery effort took approximately ten hours, with costs reaching around €100,000. Prior attempts to retrieve the barge had been thwarted by unfavorable weather in the days following the incident, and planning for the recovery was more intricate than initially anticipated. Fortunately, an initial evaluation indicated that the bridge remained stable with only minimal damage, requiring replacement of three pleasure boat piers.
