Quick Response Saves Distressed Yacht Crew in Outer Weser
On August 22, 2021, the research vessel 'Komet' played a crucial role in assisting a distressed yacht crew in the Outer Weser. A crew member aboard the yacht was experiencing severe seasickness and hypothermia while en route from Heligoland back to shore. Unable to continue sailing, the yacht dropped anchor outside the fairway. Promptly at around 4:25 p.m., the Maritime Rescue Coordination Center (MRCC) of the DGzRS in Bremen received a distress call regarding the situation. Responding swiftly, the nearby research vessel 'Komet' dispatched its dinghy and sent a crew member to provide assistance. Meanwhile, the lifeboat 'Hermann Rudolf Meyer' was already on its way from Bremerhaven, launching its daughter boat 'Christian' to take charge of the ailing patient. The individual was treated in the onboard hospital of the lifeboat as they sped toward Bremerhaven for further care, where he would be handed over to shore-based rescue services. The nimble dinghy from the 'Komet' remained on the scene with the yacht until the lifeboat 'Emil Zimmermann' from the Fedderwardersiel station arrived. The 'Emil Zimmermann' then towed the yacht towards Bremerhaven, where the 'Hermann Rudolf Meyer' could safely take over once more. The BSH survey vessel 'Komet' was the first to arrive at the scene, demonstrating the effectiveness of maritime collaboration in emergencies.
