Working Conditions Aboard the Nordergruende

During the Sail Bremerhaven event on August 13, 2025, a dramatic incident occurred when the 22-meter sailing vessel 'Mathilde,' constructed in 1914, erupted in flames while participating in the parade. The 'Nordergründe,' a nearby vessel, promptly came to the aid of the distressed ship as it exited the formation of tall ships. Emergency crews swiftly fought the fire, which originated in the engine room, while two individuals on board sustained minor injuries. Following initial treatment from trained paramedics, the injured were transferred to a boat operated by the German Lifesaving Society (DLRG) to receive further medical attention upon reaching the shore. Thanks to the fire department's preparedness, a specialized firefighting unit was stationed on the buoy tender 'Nordergründe,' enabling a rapid response. The 'Mathilde' was successfully escorted back to port after separating from the fleet of approximately 100 vessels, with reports indicating that batteries within the ship had overheated, igniting the fire.
