Medevac Operation for Injured Pilot in the Weser Estuary
On the evening of January 3, 2026, a serious incident unfolded on the Outer Weser River when a pilot aboard the 'Weserpilot' suffered an injury, prompting a swift response from maritime rescue teams. At approximately 7 p.m., the 'Weser Pilot' alerted the Maritime Rescue Coordination Center (MRCC) Bremen to its urgent need for medical aid, as it was located around eight nautical miles offshore from Wremen. The lifeboat 'Hermann Rudolf Meyer', stationed in Bremerhaven, joined forces with a Sea Lion SAR helicopter from the German Naval Air Wing 5 to assist in the delicate operation. The 'Weser Pilot' was instructed to meet with the lifeboat for the transfer. An emergency physician and an ambulance crew were promptly dispatched to the 'Hermann Rudolf Meyer', which then set sail toward the pilot vessel. Challenging conditions with two to three meter seas, an outgoing tide, and northwesterly winds blowing at six to eight Beaufort made the operation particularly tricky. However, around the same time, the SAR helicopter arrived at the scene, and improved weather briefly allowed for the successful winching of the injured pilot via a rescue basket. The lifeboat remained on-site to secure the area, while the helicopter efficiently transported the pilot to a hospital for immediate medical attention.
Rescue Efforts Underway for Distressed Yacht Near Wangerooge
On May 30, 2023, an urgent rescue operation unfolded off the northern coast of Wangerooge when an 11-meter sailing yacht reported critical water ingress in its engine room. Comprised of a crew of two, a man and a woman, the sailors struggled to manage the flooding conditions utilizing their onboard pump. Responding swiftly to the emergency, lifeboats from DGzRs stations Wangerooge and Hooksiel, along with the pilot tender 'Weser Pilot', were deployed to the scene. The lifeboats 'Bernhard Gruben' and 'Fritz Thieme' arrived promptly, with the pilot tender launching its dinghy first to assist the distressed yacht. A crew member from the dinghy expertly boarded the sailing vessel to provide support to the anxious sailors. Despite challenging weather conditions, featuring strong winds from the north and swells exceeding one meter, the lifeboat 'Fritz Thieme' successfully maneuvered alongside the yacht and provided essential bilge pumps. This timely intervention halted the rising water levels in the engine room. Once the situation was stabilized, the 'Weser Pilot' was released from the mission, and the lifeboat 'Bernhard Gruben' remained on scene to escort the yacht safely back to the port of Wangerooge. Emergency Medical Evacuation Near Wangerooge
On December 29, 2016, a critical medical emergency unfolded aboard the vessel 'Weser' when the ship's mechanics fell gravely ill, necessitating a swift medevac operation. Facing less than 360 meters of visibility due to thick fog, the lifeboat 'Vormann Steffens' was dispatched to the scene to conduct the urgent evacuation. The 'Weser', located in the outer Jade, had reached out for immediate medical assistance after a crew member lost consciousness; fortunately, he remained aware during the incident. With helicopters grounded due to adverse weather conditions, the lifeboat became the only viable alternative for rapid response. The 'Vormann Steffens' departed from Hooksiel's outer port at 2 a.m., navigating through choppy waters that had been agitated by previous storms. By 3 a.m., the lifeboat rendezvoused with the 'Weser', about two miles north of Wangerooge, and successfully took the patient aboard. Following emergency care in the lifeboat's onboard hospital, the 40-year-old sailor was transported back to the port of Hooksiel by 4:30 a.m., where he was subsequently handed over to local rescue services for further treatment.
